PFISTERER has been granted a patent for its innovative HVDC pluggable connector technology, a development that supports the growing demand for reliable and efficient high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Designed for applications up to 525 kV, the technology addresses key challenges in HVDC cable connections while offering advantages in installation, maintenance and system reliability.

As countries invest in renewable energy, offshore wind projects and long-distance power transmission, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is becoming an increasingly important part of modern energy infrastructure. Compared to conventional AC transmission, HVDC systems enable efficient bulk power transfer over long distances while supporting the integration of remote renewable energy resources into national grids.
The continued expansion of HVDC networks has created demand for advanced cable accessories and connection systems capable of operating under the unique electrical stresses associated with direct current transmission. Responding to these requirements, PFISTERER has secured a patent from the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) for its newly developed HVDC pluggable connector technology.
Addressing Key HVDC Challenges
Unlike AC systems, HVDC applications subject insulation systems to continuous electrical stress. One of the primary engineering challenges is managing the accumulation of space charges within insulating materials, which can impact long-term performance and reliability.
To address this, PFISTERER has developed a new field control concept incorporating an innovative stress cone design together with specially engineered insulating materials tailored for HVDC applications. The technology has been successfully tested in accordance with IEC 62895 and is designed for operating voltages of up to 525 kV, making it suitable for modern high-capacity transmission networks.
The patented connector has been developed for a range of HVDC applications, including converter stations, outdoor cable terminations and repair joints.
Enhancing Installation and Maintenance Efficiency
In addition to its electrical performance, the pluggable design offers several practical advantages for project developers, utilities and network operators.
The connector technology can help reduce installation time and simplify maintenance activities while enabling more compact installation arrangements. These benefits are particularly valuable in offshore environments, where space constraints and complex logistics can significantly impact project execution.
The technology also supports the use of environmentally friendly alternative gases in outdoor terminations and offers increased flexibility for repair applications, helping improve maintainability across the asset lifecycle.
Supporting the Future of Energy Infrastructure
Around the world, HVDC technology is playing an increasingly important role in enabling offshore wind developments, renewable energy integration, grid interconnections and long-distance transmission corridors. As utilities seek to improve transmission efficiency and strengthen grid resilience, innovations in cable accessory technology will be essential to ensuring reliable network operation.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Konstantin Kurfiss, Member of the Executive Board at PFISTERER, noted that the development successfully addresses critical challenges in DC insulation technology through the combination of optimized field control and newly developed insulating materials, creating an important foundation for the continued expansion of HVDC transmission networks.
The granting of the patent further strengthens PFISTERER's position as a technology leader in electrical connection systems and highlights the ongoing innovation taking place across the global transmission sector.
Macro's Perspective
As PFISTERER's representative in Bangladesh, Macro International Ltd continues to follow developments in advanced cable accessory and transmission technologies that support the evolving requirements of modern power systems. Innovations such as PFISTERER's patented HVDC connector technology demonstrate how engineering advancements are helping enable the next generation of reliable, efficient and sustainable energy networks.
